Cherie DeVaux made history on Saturday, becoming the first woman to train a Kentucky Derby winner with Golden Tempo’s thrilling victory.

A Historic Win for DeVaux and Golden Tempo

DeVaux’s achievement marks a monumental moment in horse racing, breaking barriers and inspiring future generations of women in the sport. She has been training horses for eight years, establishing her own stable and achieving this historic feat in her first Derby attempt.

Golden Tempo’s Stunning Performance

Ridden by jockey Jose Ortiz, Golden Tempo delivered a breathtaking performance, surging past competitors in the final stretch to win in a time of 2:02.27. The horse, a 23-1 underdog, defeated favorites like Renegade, who finished second, and Ocelli, who placed third.

Overcoming Challenges and Celebrating Success

The victory was celebrated by a crowd of over 100,000 spectators at Churchill Downs. DeVaux, overwhelmed with emotion, praised Ortiz’s masterful ride and Golden Tempo’s incredible comeback from being far behind early in the race.

A Growing Trend of Female Success

DeVaux is only the second female trainer to win a Triple Crown race, following Jena Antonucci’s 2023 Belmont Stakes victory with Arcangelo. She is the 18th woman to ever saddle a horse in the Kentucky Derby.

“I’m glad I can be a representative of all women everywhere that we can do anything we set our minds to,” DeVaux stated.

A Race Marked by Drama and Triumph

The 2024 Kentucky Derby, known as “the most exciting two minutes in sports,” featured a thrilling finish. Several horses were scratched before the race, including Great White and The Puma, due to injuries and illness.

Ortiz Achieves a Lifelong Dream

For jockey Jose Ortiz, this win was a dream come true after 11 previous attempts at the Derby. He dedicated the victory to his late grandfather, stating, “I just wish my grandpa was here, but I know he’s looking from heaven.”
