Ontario’s Ministry of Health has expanded its hantavirus monitoring to include seven additional low-risk contacts, bringing the total number of individuals under isolation orders in the province to ten. This move comes as global cases of the virus rise to 11, with three fatalities reported. high-risk contacts include passengers from a cruise ship linked to the deaths, as well as an individual who shared a flight with an infected passenger.

The $45-Day Isolation Period

According to Jackson Jacobs, a spokesperson for Ontario’s Health Minister, the seven new individuals added to the monitoring list are classified as low-risk contacts. they had secondary contact with high-risk individuals who were in direct contact with infected passengers during travel. The high-risk contacts, which include a couple from Grey Bruce who were on the affected cruise ship and a visitor to Canada in the Peel region, remain under strict 45-day isolation as a precautionary measure.

Global Risk Assessment

The World Health Organization (WHO) continues to assess the global risk of the hantavirus outbreak as minimal.. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, cautioned that while no signs of a broader outbbreak exist, vigilance remains critical due to the virus’s extended incubation period. Public health experts emphasize that the Andes virus strain responsible for the outbreak is known for person-to-person transmission but requires prolonged, close exposure and poses no pandemic risk.

No New Deaths Since May 2

As reported by The Canadian Press, no new deaths have been reported since May 2, with all confirmed cases linked to the cruise ship incident. Health officials report that the three high-risk contacts in Ontario remain asymptomatic.. The total number of monitored individuals across Ontario now includes ten people, with six more isolating in Alberta and British Columbia.

What We Still Don’t Know

While the global risk remains low, several questions remain unanswered. According to The Canadian Press, it is unclear whether the additional low-risk contacts will develop symptoms or if there are more individuals who may have been exposed but have not yet been identified. Additionally, the source of the initial outbreak on the cruise ship remains under investigation.
