Senate Recess Stalls SAVE America Act, Bernie Moreno Says Sen. Bernie Moreno said Senate old-timers cling to a past vision, blocking the SAVE America Act's voter ID and proof of citizenship requirements. Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-OH) said on Thursday evening that old timer senators cling to a view of what the Senate could have been and fail to operate in reality, during a roundtable with Breitbart News Editor-in-Chief Alex Marlow and Washington Bureau Chief Matthew Boyle. The discussion focused on the Senate going on recess without acting on the SAVE America Act and what it will take to pass the bill. SAVE America Act and Senate RecessAn audience member asked Moreno why the Senate opted to go on recess without taking action on the SAVE America Act, and what needs to be done to get the bill across the finish line. Boyle expanded the scope by highlighting frustration that the Senate is going on recess ahead of the midterm election.Boyle asked what changes could be seen early next year after the election, assuming Republicans hold the majority. Moreno briefly recapped the core of the SAVE America Act, reminding the audience that it requires voter ID and proof of citizenship when registering to vote.He said those are the only two things in the bill. Moreno described a scenario where someone shows up at the ballot box and claims to be Alex Marlow, but is not asked for identification. He also referenced a situation in Minnesota where one person could vouch for twenty others behind them, allowing them all to vote. Moreno called that totally insane.Moreno said that 53 out of 53 Republicans voted for a bill that included just simple voter ID, but zero Democrats voted for it. He noted that they lost support from three Republicans when they added proof of citizenship. Two of those three are retiring, so virtually every Republican agrees to the SAVE Act, he said.He emphasized that they need 60 votes to end debate, but unless the rule is ended or Senate rules are modified, that cannot happen. Moreno added that getting rid of the filibuster does not even have close to 50 votes. He attributed this to people who have been in the Senate for a long time and cling to a view of what the Senate could have been, should have been, or was, which is not the reality of today.Insider Trading Ban and Media RoleMoreno also said that a bill was put forward yesterday to ban insider trading. He expressed disbelief that insider trading is currently allowed and stated that the bill would ban it. He said every Democrat voted against it.Moreno used these Senate votes as examples of why conservative media is important to get the truth out so the American people know what Democrats are really doing. He said this is why President Trump gets so angry at the media because they cover the wrong things. He suggested that media should put microphones in Democrats' faces and ask how they could vote against a bill that bans insider trading or a bill that requires proving who you are when you vote. The roundtable was held on Thursday evening and was hosted by Breitbart News. The event allowed attendees to interact live with top leaders and ask questions. The discussion highlighted the legislative hurdles facing the SAVE America Act and the broader debate over Senate rules and media coverage.
