Florida Driver Arrested After Allegedly Fleeing Traffic Stop and Crashing Into School Bus A Florida man was arrested after authorities said he fled a traffic stop, struck other vehicles and collided head-on with a school bus carrying 19 children in Sumter County. The suspect allegedly ran from the crash but was captured by a deputy and is now facing several charges. A 23-year-old Florida man is facing multiple criminal charges after authorities said he fled from a traffic stop, struck several vehicles and then crashed head-on into a school bus carrying 19 children. The incident occurred Tuesday morning in Sumter County and was recorded by cameras inside the bus as well as by a deputy's body-worn camera. Although the collision was serious, officials said the children were not reported to have suffered major injuries. The case has renewed attention on the dangers created when drivers attempt to escape from law enforcement in populated areas and near schools.According to the Sumter County Sheriff's Office, a deputy first noticed Qahiem Williams allegedly traveling 17 miles per hour above the posted speed limit on County Road 466 near Tatonka Terrace, in the area of The Villages Intermediate Center. The deputy reportedly made a U-turn and activated emergency lights in an effort to stop the vehicle. Instead of pulling over, Williams allegedly accelerated.Investigators said he sideswiped two vehicles while moving through a traffic light, beginning a chain of events that ended with a collision involving the school bus. Authorities said the impact from the earlier crashes damaged the axle of Williams' vehicle, making it difficult to control. The vehicle then crossed into the path of a Sumter County school bus on County Road 103 and struck it head-on.Video recorded inside the bus appears to show the driver's side door of Williams' vehicle opening shortly before the collision. The footage also documents the force of the crash and the immediate danger faced by the students and bus personnel. After the collision, Williams allegedly abandoned the damaged vehicle and ran from the scene on foot. A deputy pursued Williams and eventually took him into custody, according to the sheriff's office.Officials said he was medically evaluated and cleared before being transported to the Sumter County Detention Center. He was being held without bond. The charges listed by authorities include fleeing or eluding law enforcement, driving with a suspended license, possession of marijuana, leaving the scene of a crash, resisting an officer, hit-and-run and a moving traffic violation.Investigators also said Williams had two outstanding Sumter County warrants connected to earlier allegations of fleeing or eluding and driving with a suspended license. Sumter County Sheriff Patrick Breeden condemned the alleged conduct, emphasizing that the decision to flee placed children and other road users at substantial risk. He said the department would not tolerate behavior that endangers children and stated that the community was safer with Williams in custody. The charges are allegations, and Williams is entitled to due process as the case proceeds. Prosecutors and investigators are expected to review the video evidence, witness accounts, vehicle damage and records connected to the outstanding warrants as they determine the next steps in the case
