The Freedom Flotilla Coalition has launched a new international maritime mission to challenge Israel's blockade of Gaza. a fleet of vessels is currently navigating European waters in preparation for an attempted arrival at the Palestinian enclave in October 2025.
The European transit of the Handala II and the Kate
The Handala II vessel departed from Gallipoli Port in Italy on 20 July 2025, following previous visits to Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. Meanwhile, the vessel named Kate set sail from the British city of Bristol in August and has already made stops in Ireland, Germany, and France.
As the coalition reported, these ships are expected to visit additional ports in Spain, Portugal, and Italy before continuing their journey toward Gaza. the mission aims to use these stops to build momentum and mobilize public pressure across the European continent.

Participants in the mission include a diverse group of human rights advocates, trade union activists, journalists, and medical professionals. edward Digilio, an engineer from the US state of Maryland, acknowledged the serious risks of sailing toward Gaza but argued that the cost of sileence and inaction is far greater.
The coalition's strategy reflects a broader trend of using maritime demonstrations to influence international policy regarding the conflict. Zohar Chamberlain Regev, a member of the steering committee, stated that the group intends to pressure governments to end weapons and energy shipments to Israel and to impose sanctions on the country.
The violent precedent of the Spring 2025 mission
The upoming voyage is shadowed by the violent encounters reported during a previous mission in the spring of 2025. According to the coalition , Israeli forces attacked and detained hundreds of participants during that earlier attempt, with volunteers reporting severe beatings, broken bones, gunshot wounds, and sexual assault while in custody.
