Alberni Pacific Railway Marks Third Anniversary with First Nations Celebration
The Tseshaht and Hupacasath First Nations hosted a vibrant celebration on Saturday, commemorating the third year of operations for the Alberni Pacific Railway (APR). The event featured traditional songs and acknowledged the railway’s significant contributions to the region.
Railway Expansion Boosts Tourism
The railway’s recent extension to the Barclay Hotel, a section of track unused since 2018, has nearly doubled the tourist experience. This addition provides 15 minutes of additional scenic rail travel and expands the operational track length for visitors.
Economic Impact and Visitor Numbers
Richard Spencer, operations manager for APR, emphasized the railway’s role as an economic driver for the Alberni Valley. Last year, the railway attracted over 10,000 visitors, with 75 percent originating from outside the region.
Future Expansion Plans
The railway’s expansion is part of a larger vision to revitalize rail travel on Vancouver Island. Plans are underway to potentially extend the rail line to Parksville, in collaboration with local governments and First Nations.
Indigenous Perspectives and Partnerships
Waamiiš (Ken Watts), Elected Chief of the Tseshaht First Nation, expressed optimism about future extensions, despite challenges such as past trestle fires. He underscored the importance of partnerships in driving the railway’s growth and its impact on Port Alberni’s downtown.
Local Government Support
Charles Mealy, Port Alberni’s Acting Mayor, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the railway’s positive influence on local tourism and economic development.
Long-Term Vision for Vancouver Island Rail
Ken McRae, a longtime Island Corridor Foundation board member, remains confident in the eventual restoration of the rail line to Parksville. He believes Vancouver Island should embrace rail travel as a sustainable and efficient transportation option, aligning with global trends.
The celebration concluded with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, symbolizing a commitment to continued expansion and the railway’s ongoing success.
