The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has unveiled a strategic roadmap to fundamentally transform wireless connectivity by 2027.. Led by technical marketing director Damon Barnes, the organization plans to increase data speeds and expand into new frequency bands to support next-generation devices.
A jump from 2 Mbps to 7.5 Mbps
The Bluetooth SIG is aiming for a nearly fourfold increase in data throughput to support more intensive digital tasks. according to the organization,data speeds could jump from the current 2 Mbps to as high as 7.5 Mbps. This massive increase is intended to facilitate high-resolution, lossless audio transmission and provide richer sensor data for wearable devices.
For the end user, this speed boost translates to much more efficient file sharing. Implementation demonstrations suggest that transferring a file over the air could decrease from the current 16 seconds to approximately four seconds. This advancement is expected to improve the integration of Bluetooth with upcoming AI-driven devices and immersive technologies like Dolby Atmos.
Moving beyond the 5 billion devices on 2.4 GHz
To address the growing problem of signal interference, the Bluetooth SIG plans to move away from the heavily congested 2.4 GHz band. Currently , over 5 billion Bluetooth products are shipped annually using this frequency, leading to significant network crowding. as reported by the organization, the roadmap includes enabling Bluetooth operation in 5 GHz frequencies by 2027 and 6 GHz freequencies by 2028.
This expansion into higher spectrums will allow for ultra-low latency and higher bandwidth, which are critical for:
- Competitive gaming peripherals
- AR/VR spatial tracking
- Interactive audio experiences
IP Link and the shift toward Wi-Fi-style remote control
A significant functional change is arriving with the debut of IP Link technology, which is expected to launch later this year. While current Bluetooth-enabled smart devices, such as door locks, often require proximity for verification through Channel Sounding, IP Link will change that dynamic. This new technology will allow users to control and configure Bluetooth accessories remotely, effetcively allowing Bluetooth to function with the versatility of Wi-Fi.
The hardware hurdle: Will Apple, Samsung, and Microsoft keep pace?
The successful rollout of these features depends on a complex chain of hardware updates and industry-wide adoption. The Bluetooth SIG must first officially announce the new standard as a Bluetooth 6.X version. However, the roadmap's timeline is heavily contingent on whether major tech giants—specifically Apple, Microsoft, and Samsung—update their hardware to support these new protocols.
This leaves several critical questions for the industry.. It is currently unverified how quickly accessory manufacturers will update their device lineups to support the 7.5 Mbps speeds or the new frequency bands. Furthermore, while the SIG has outlined these goals, the organization has not yet specified how it will incentivize the massive ecosystem of manufacturers to move away from the established 2.4 GHz standard in favor of the more complex 5 GHz and 6 GHz implementations.
