Former FBI Deputy Director Voices Safety Concerns
Dan Bongino, who served as FBI Deputy Director under Director Kash Patel from March 2025 to January 2026, has publicly stated his fears regarding his safety after leaving the agency. Despite receiving praise from President Donald Trump, Bongino anticipates potential political retaliation from a Democratic administration.
Concerns Over Legal and Physical Threats
Bongino warned of possible legal repercussions and even physical threats against him. He expressed these concerns during an appearance on Sean Hannity’s podcast, Hang Out with Sean Hannity, stating, “I’m scared, man. I know what I did. And I’m proud of my work. And I am proud of what me and Kash accomplished in the past year.”
Operating 'By the Book'
Bongino and Patel maintained they operated within legal boundaries, even hiring an external lawyer to oversee their actions. However, he believes Democrats might “rewrite the book,” referencing the indictments faced by former President Trump after leaving office.
Drawing Parallels to Trump's Treatment
His fears extend beyond legal challenges, as Bongino worries about potential intimidation tactics. He openly expressed concern that “thugs” might be sent to his home, drawing comparisons to what he perceives as the unfair treatment of Trump during the Russia investigation, known as Crossfire Hurricane.
Controversies During Tenure
Bongino’s time at the FBI was marked by internal disputes and controversy. He clashed with then-Attorney General Pam Bondi over the handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case. He even considered resigning due to disagreements regarding the Epstein files, specifically the alleged client list.
Epstein Investigation Disputes
Bongino reportedly took a day off to reconsider his future at the FBI due to disagreements over the Epstein files. He criticized Bondi for making promises about the investigation that were not fulfilled. He was also internally blamed for the missing minute of security footage from Epstein’s jail cell.
Weaponization of the Justice System
Bongino expressed broader anxieties about the potential weaponization of the justice system against political opponents. He told Hannity, “I’m extremely concerned they are weaponizing the justice system and start arresting people for jaywalking or mattress tag ripping. It worries me every day.”
