Police Sergeant Dismissed for Offensive Messages
A Greater Manchester Police sergeant has been dismissed following a disciplinary hearing that revealed deeply offensive WhatsApp messages. Sergeant Natalie Dolan, responsible for training new recruits, was found guilty of gross misconduct after a four-day investigation into her online communications.
Investigation Details and Findings
The hearing focused on an 18-month exchange between Sgt Dolan and a former trainee, PC Jones. While allegations of racism and sexism were not substantiated, the panel determined her messages regarding disability and treatment of colleagues constituted a serious breach of professional standards.
Offensive Remarks Highlighted
Specifically, Sgt Dolan suggested new recruits 'need to be read to like Harvey Price,' a hurtful reference to Katie Price’s son who lives with multiple disabilities. She also used derogatory terms, including 'sp*ckers' and 'lickers,' described as a ‘horrible’ way to mock disabled people.
Defense and Panel Rejection
Despite attempts by her legal counsel, Jennifer Ferrario, to defend the comments as jokes or typographical errors, the panel rejected these explanations. They concluded the language was demonstrably mocking and discriminatory.
Broader Pattern of Unprofessional Conduct
The investigation revealed 23 messages containing disparaging comments about fellow officers and 4 messages ridiculing student officers under her charge. Prior instances of disrespectful language, including a reference to the Chief Constable, were also brought to light.
Response from Katie Price
Katie Price publicly condemned the officer’s actions, emphasizing the unacceptable nature of professionals targeting vulnerable individuals. She stated her commitment to combating such behaviour.
Panel Decision and Consequences
Despite Sgt Dolan’s 25 years of service, the panel deemed her behaviour incompatible with continued service. While initial allegations of racism and sexism were not proven, the confirmed ableism and gross misconduct led to her immediate termination.
The disciplinary panel, chaired by GMP's Chief Resource Officer Lee Rawlinson, concluded that Sgt Dolan had violated the core principles of integrity and equality. Mr Rawlinson described her actions as a ‘serious departure from expected ethical standards.’
Sgt Dolan has been added to the College of Policing barring list, preventing future employment in law enforcement. DS Dave Jones affirmed the force’s commitment to upholding professional standards.
