Philadelphia is gearing up for a landmark 2026, set to host six World Cup matches at Lincoln Financial Field and celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary. A group of local students is preparing to play a vital role in welcoming international guests.
Youth Diplomats Program
These students are participating in the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia’s 2026 Youth Diplomats program, receiving intensive training to serve as certified volunteers during these major events. The initiative offers hands-on experience in cultural diplomacy, local history, and international etiquette.
Empowering Future Leaders
According to Lauren Swartz, President and CEO of the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia, the program aims to ensure young people are active contributors, not just spectators, to Philadelphia’s historic year. Over 3,000 middle and high school students in Southeastern Pennsylvania already participate in the Council’s year-round programs.
Students like Michelle Wallace expressed excitement about the opportunities offered by the World Affairs Council. Elizabeth Bailey highlighted the importance of youth involvement, while Valarie Tolbert emphasized the significance of youth engagement in these events.
Practical Training & Cultural Awareness
During a visit to Lincoln Financial Field, the future Youth Diplomats toured the stadium and practiced international greetings. They even received guidance from the Philadelphia Eagles mascot, Swoop.
The training included learning the nuances of non-verbal communication, such as the proper way to perform a French cheek kiss – which involves a kissing sound rather than actual contact. Caleb Seong, a ninth grader, shared his relief at understanding this cultural detail.
Looking Ahead
Program organizers aim to keep young people actively involved in shaping the 2026 celebrations. The program is seeking to involve more students and welcomes support from organizations. More information is available online.
The Youth Diplomats program is designed to cultivate a generation of globally-minded leaders who will continue Philadelphia’s tradition of inclusivity and hospitality.
