OTTAWA – Conservative MP Marilyn Gladue has crossed the floor to join the Liberal Party, as reported during a CBC News broadcast on Wednesday. This defection marks the fifth MP to join the Liberals in recent months and is expected to bolster Prime Minister Mark Carney’s chances of securing a majority government.

Scrutiny of Poilievre’s Leadership

The defection has raised questions about Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre’s leadership and control of his caucus. Poilievre attributed the loss of Gladue to Prime Minister Carney, stating his leadership “does not come from dirty backroom deals. It comes from the people of Canada.” He also stated he has no need to reflect on his political future, citing the 8.3 million Canadians who voted Conservative.

However, the broadcast reported that morale is low within the Conservative party, with some MPs preemptively posting online to state they will not be crossing the floor. One Conservative MP revealed they had been approached multiple times to join the government benches.

Additionally, CBC News reported that two Liberal sources indicate the party is in discussions with nine additional MPs about potentially crossing the floor. A former pollster for Justin Trudeau, speaking on the broadcast, suggested Carney is prioritizing securing a comfortable majority, even if it means accepting MPs with potentially conflicting past views. The pollster stated accepting Gladue may create issues management challenges but ultimately secures a majority.

Gladue’s Past Positions and Liberal Response

Gladue previously supported the convoy protests, opposed a Liberal bill to ban conversion therapy, and indicated she would allow MPs to introduce private members' bills to restrict abortion. She stated she will vote with the government and “protect the rights and freedoms of women to choose, for people to be who they are and love who they love.”

Prime Minister Carney defended his decision to welcome Gladue despite her past positions, stating the party has “core values” that remain unchanged and that others “come to support the mission of the party and the government.”

Some young Liberals expressed a cautious approach to Gladue’s arrival, with one stating they are “trying to make my own opinion” and see how she aligns with the party’s current direction.
