OTTAWA – Marilyn Gladue, formerly the Conservative Member of Parliament for a riding in southwestern Ontario, has joined the Liberal Party, CBC News reported Wednesday. This is the fifth MP to join the Liberals in recent months, strengthening Prime Minister Mark Carney’s position and bringing his government closer to a majority.
During a live broadcast on CBC News, Government House Leader Stephen McKinnon stated that the Liberal Party has a long history and core values that new members must adhere to. He indicated that Gladue had examined Prime Minister Carney’s priorities and the party’s functioning before deciding to join.
McKinnon also addressed concerns about Gladue’s past criticisms of Liberal policies, stating that people “evolve” and that her decision to join the Liberal caucus indicates an alignment with their values. He added that Canadians in Conservative ridings are seeking representation from MPs who are focused on solutions and a positive vision for the country.
According to CBC News, the Liberal Party is currently in conversations with as many as nine other MPs regarding potential floor crossings. McKinnon did not confirm any imminent announcements before Monday’s by-elections but acknowledged that several MPs from other parties are dissatisfied with their current leadership and priorities.
The CBC broadcast also included a segment on concerns regarding accommodation requests for public servants wanting to work from home, with some unions reporting increased difficulties in getting requests approved. Reports included instances of employees being granted accommodations only after experiencing health crises in the workplace.
Additionally, CBC News reported on preparations in northern Manitoba communities for potential wildfires, with communities purchasing equipment and building fire guards following last year’s evacuations. A Radio Canada investigation also revealed concerns about fake maple syrup being sold in Quebec, with producers allegedly relabeling products to conceal the use of cane sugar.
