This study specifically tracked diagnoses of both Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia, which is often caused by reduced blood flow to the brain.
This finding stands in sharp contrast to the benefits of recreational movement. the massive analysis, which tracked over 4.2 million participants aged 45 to 93 for a decade, revealed that those who engaged in lesure-time exercise—such as running, swimming, or cycling—saw a 24 per cent lower risk of dementia compared to the least active individuals. The researchers noted that while 14 modifiable risk factors, including physical inactivity, account for 45 per cent of dementia cases, the type of activity matters immensely.
Professor David Raichlen’s theory on pollution and stress
Professor David Raichlen, a study co-author, suggests that the increased risk is likely not caused by the physical movement itself. Instead, the risk may stem from the specific environmental and social conditions inherent to manual labor. The report notes that occupations involving heavy lifting, scaffolding, or building often come with higher exposure to air and noise pollution.
Furthermore, these roles frequently involve significant psychosocial stress, repetitive tasks, and limited recovery time. Professor Raichlen emphasizes that the context of the activity—such as the presence of social interaction and stress reduction found in leisure exercise—may matter just as much as the movement itself. In contrast, manual occupations may involve longer, unsociable hours and fewer opportunities for the restorative recreational exercise that protects cognitive function.
The 27 per cent risk identified by York University
The findings regarding manual labor add a complex layer to existing research on sedentary behavior. Earlier this year, researchers at York University in Canada published data showing that sitting for more than eight hours a day can increase dementia risk by nearly a third. Specifically, the York University study found that a full day of sedentary work increases the risk by 27 per cent.
This creates a nuanced spectrum of brain health: while sitting too much is dangerous and leisure exercise is protective,the intense, high-stress movement of certain manual jobs may also be harmful. this is further complicated by research led by Professor Raichlen last month, which suggested that sedentary but mentally stimulating activities might affect brain structure differently than passive activities like watching television.
The unverified connection to active commuting
There remains an unverified connection between active commuting and increased dementia risk. While the University of Southern California researchers observed a modest increase in risk among people who actively commute, they noted that this finding was based on only two studies. Consequently, the evidence for this specific link remains uncertain and requires more robust investigation.
