A study involving 64,000 Britons suggests that high sugar intake during the first 1,000 days of life increases the risk of five major cancers. Researchers found that those born during wartime sugar rationing had significantly lower rates of liver, prostate , lung, rectal, and breast cancers in adulthood.
The 1953 sugar rationing shift and the 64,000-person data set
Researchers from China Agricultural University and the University of Cambridge utilized a rare "natural experiment" to examine the long-term effects of early-life nutrition. According to the report, Dr. weilong Zhang, a professor of economics at the University of Cambridge, analyzed data from 64,000 British citizens born between 1951 and 1956. This specific window is critical because sugar rationing in the UK ended in September 1953, creating two distinct groups of children born only months apart but exposed to vastly different dietary environments.
The disparity in sugar consumption was stark. During the rationing period, Britons consumed roughly 41g of sugar per day—an amount comparable to a single 330ml can of Coca Cola. Once the restrictions were lifted, the average daily intake for toddlers doubled to 80g. The study focused on the period from conception to a child's second birthday, a developmental phase where the immune system and organs form and lifelong food preferences are established.
A 69 per cent drop in liver cancer risk
The findings, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal, indicate that limited sugar exposure in infancy correlates with a significantly lower risk of several malignancies decades later. The most dramatic result was seen in liver cancer, including intrahepatic bile duct cancer, where the rationed group showed a 69 per cent lower risk.. This is particularly significant given that liver cancer kills more than 90 per cent of its patients within ten years of diagnosis.
Other substantial reductions in risk were noted across four other major cancer types. As the report says, the study found the following lower risks for those who consumed less sugar in early life:
- Prostate cancer: 52 per cent lower risk (affecting roughly one in eight men).
- Lung cancer: 41 per cent lower risk.
- Rectal cancer: 40 per cent lower risk.
- Breast cancer: 36 per cent lower risk.
The 2.2-year biological age gap and lifelong taste preferences
Beyond cancer rates, the research suggests that early sugar intake leaves a permanent imprint on the body's biological clock. Dr. Weilong Zhang noted that individuals who consumed less sugar in early childhood had approximately 2.2 fewer years of biological ageing. This "wear and tear" metric suggests that their cells and immune systems remained younger than those of their peers who had higher sugar exposure, potentially offering better protection against age-related diseases.
Furthermore, the study discovered that these early experiences dictated dietary habits well into middle age. People who experienced sugar rationing as toddlers continued to consume less sugar and maintained more diverse, healthier diets by the time they reached age 50. This suggests that the "imprint" of the first 1,000 days extends beyond biological damage to include the psychological mapping of taste and preference.
The missing link between early sugar and rising bowel cancer in under-50s
The timing of these findings is particularly relevant given the current health crisis in the UK, where bowel cancer rates are soaring among people under 50. Specifically, diagnoses among 25 to 49-year-olds are 50 per cent higher than they were in the mid-1990s. While Dr. Weilong Zhang clarified that the study does not prove higher sugar intake is the sole driver of this modern spike, he suggested that early-life dietary exposure is likely a contributing factor to rectal cancer risk.
However, several gaps remain in the data. the researchers admitted they could not precisely measure the exact amount of sugar children consumed after the 1953 rationing ended, relying instead on the general trend that intake was "substantially more." Additionally, because the study relies on historical data from a specific population in the 1950s, it remains to be seen if these correlations hold true across different ethnicities or in the context of modern, highly processed ultra-processed foods that differ from the simple sugars of the mid-century.
