A new report from Planned Parenthood reveals a record-high number of abortions performed in the past year, igniting controversy and criticism from pro-life groups. The report, titled “Care Continues,” also details financial information and changes in the organization’s services, intensifying discussions about healthcare priorities and government funding.
Record Number of Abortions Reported
Planned Parenthood’s report documents a record-breaking 434,450 abortions performed between 2023 and 2024. This figure represents an 8 percent increase compared to the previous year and a substantial 34 percent increase since 2014, according to an analysis by the Charlotte Lozier Institute (CLI).
CLI Analysis Highlights Key Trends
Tessa Cox, a Senior Research Associate at CLI, stated that the data “clearly indicates that abortion remains a primary focus for the organization.” The CLI analysis also revealed that prenatal services, miscarriage care, and adoption referrals constitute a small percentage of the total services provided.
- Prenatal services: 1.7 percent (7,685)
- Miscarriage care: 0.6 percent (2,852)
- Adoption referrals: 0.7 percent (3,038)
For every adoption referral facilitated by Planned Parenthood, the organization performed 143 abortions during the reported timeframe.
Decline in Preventative Healthcare Services
The analysis further indicates concerning trends in other areas of healthcare. Cancer screening and prevention services decreased by 43 percent, while breast exams and Pap tests fell by 55 percent and 38 percent, respectively.
Service Reductions Detailed
Prenatal services experienced a 56 percent decrease, and contraceptive services were down by 23 percent. Despite a slight increase in the number of patients (0.5 percent), overall patient numbers remain 16 percent lower than in 2014.
Financial Overview and Government Funding
Planned Parenthood reported exceeding $2.1 billion in income and holding over $2.5 billion in net assets. A significant portion of their revenue, $832 million, came from government grants, contracts, and Medicaid reimbursements, a $39.8 million increase from the prior report.
CLI estimates that taxpayer funding to Planned Parenthood has increased by 50 percent since 2014. The report details financial data prior to the planned defunding of Planned Parenthood from Medicaid dollars in 2025 under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
Private Donations and Financial Performance
Planned Parenthood also received $728.2 million in private donations, a 6 percent increase. However, the organization experienced a net loss of $29.3 million in total revenue compared to total expenses, marking the first time in recent years expenses exceeded revenue. Previously, the organization reported a surplus of $27.4 million.
The report’s findings continue the ongoing debate surrounding abortion access, healthcare priorities, and the allocation of public funds. The increase in abortions, coupled with the decline in preventative healthcare services, fuels arguments from pro-life advocates regarding the organization’s focus and the use of public funding.
