Swiss researchers recently tested biodegradable wool blankets on the Tsanfleuron Glacier to combat rapid ice loss.. The "Keep It Wool" project found that these natural covers performed as effectively as traditional synthetic tarpaulins during the summer months.
The 200-square-metre trial on Tsanfleuron Glacier
The Keep It Wool project has demonstrated that biodegradable wool blankets can effectively slow ice melt on the Tsanfleuron Glacier. This summer-long experiment, led by the Summit Foundation and the University of Lausanne,utilized a test site covering approximately 200 square metres in western Switzerland.
Researchers compared the performance of two prototype wool blankets, manufactured by the Swiss firm Fisolan, against conventional synthetic geotextile covers. According to the report, measurements taken every two weeks by project manager Timothee Steiner showed that the wool blankets limited melting just as well as the plastic alternatives.
Reducing microfibre pollution from synthetic geotextiles
Traditional glacier protection methods often rely on synthetic tarpaulins that can shed polluting microfibres into the sensitive Alpine environment. These plastic covers are typically used to reflect sunlight and reduce the amount of heat absorbed by the ice and snow.
The shift toward natural materials represents a move to mitigate the environmental footprint of climate adaptation efforts. As the report notes, while these synthetic covers are effective at reflecting heat, their tendency to shed microplastics poses a secondary ecological risk to the high Alpine landscape.
Repurposing the 70% of Swiss wool currently discarded
Switzerland currently discards between 40 and 70 per cent of its annual wool production, representing a significant untapped natural resource. The Keep It Wool project aims to provide a second life for this surplus material by turning it into a tool for environmental protection.
Fisolan's Niklaus Saegesser noted that the durability of the wool prototypes exceeded initial expectations. By utilizing a resource that is largely undervalued, the project creates a circular economy model that benefits both the agricultural sector and glacier conservation efforts.
The 0.02% coverage reality check
The scale of current glacier protection remains extremely limited, covering only 0.02 per cent of Switzerland's total glacier surface. Project backers emphasize that while wool blankets are a promising tool, they are not a comprehensive solution to the broader crisis of global warming.
Several critical questions remain regarding the long-term viability of this method. It is still unverified whether these wool blankets can withstand the extreme weather of the Alps over multiple years without degrading too quickly, and it remains unclear how the cost of specialized Fisolan blankets would scale for larger applications.. Ultimately, scientists maintain that reducing fossil fuel emissions is the only way to address the root cause of ice loss.
