Authorities warned on Thursday that a dozen high-profile UK fugitives are currently hiding within Spain. This multi-agency alert, involving Spanish police, targets suspects involved in murder, drug smuggling, and major fraud.

Two decades of Operation Captura and 98 arrests

The current crackdown marks a significant milestone in the 20-year history of Operation Captura. According to the National Crime Agency, this multi-agency campaign has successfully apprehended 98 British suspects who were attempting to evade justice by living in Spain.

Fugitives frequently target popular British expat destinations to avoid detection, according to the report. Specific areas of concern include Tenerife, Marbella, Alicante, and Malaga, where criminals attempt to blend into the large populations of UK citizens living abroad.

From £13.6 million scams to Glasgow murders

The list of twelve includes individuals accused of vastly different crimes, ranging from violent homicide to sophisticated financial fraud. For instance, Philip Barry Foster, 50, is wanted for orchestrating a £13.6 million sham modeling agency scam that targeted more than 6,000 victims.

Violent crime remains a primary focus of the investigation. The report identifies Derek McGraw Ferguson, 62, who is sought in connection with the 2007 murder of Thomas Cameron in Glasgow. Additionally, Kevin Thomas Parle, 42, is wanted for the murders of Liam Kelly in 2004 and Lucy Hargreaves in 2005.

Drug trafficking and money laundering also feature heavily on the list. Simon Dutton, 49, is accused of organizing large-scale cocaine imports and money laundering, while Matthew Purves, 41, is suspected of a conspiracy to supply multiple kilograms of cocaine across the UK.

Using plastic surgery and fake passports to hide

To maintain their cover, many fugitives employ extreme measures to hide their true identities. NCA director general Rob Jones stated that criminals often use fake passports under different names to facilitate their lives in Spain .

In more extreme cases, the NCA reported that some fugitives have even undergone plastic surgery to alter their physical appearance. "Fugitives rarely stop offending while on the run," Jones noted, adding that they attempt to stay under the radar by blending into large British expat populations.

The hunt for aliases in Marbella and Malaga

A major hurdle for law enforcement is the ability of suspects to hide behind entirely new personas. The source notes that Derek McGraw Ferguson is believed to be living under an alias, a tactic that has allowed him to remain one of Police Scotland's most wanted fugitives despite previous campaigns.

While the NCA has identified 12 specific individuals, several questions remain regarding the true scale of the problem. It is currently unverified how many other UK fugitives are operating within these same Spanish territories, and whether organized crime groups, such as the Coggins OCG, have established deeper roots in the region.
