Construction workers from Keystones Property Group discovered a £1 million cannabis cultivation site in a former chicken barn in Layer Marney, Essex, on August 28, 2026. The team utilized a drone to track suspects fleeing the scene before Essex Police arrived to secure the site.
The £1 million cannabis operation in Layer Marney
The discovery occurred when contractors from Keystones Property Group visited a farm near Clears Road to conduct measurements and inspections for a proposed conversion project. According to the report, the team had first visited the site on July 24, 2026, to discuss the refurbishment of two bungalows and the potential commercial use of large chicken barns. While the company had already begun work on one of the bungalows, they were unaware that a criminal enterprise was operating in the adjacent structures.
During the August 28 visit, the Keystones Property Group team noticed several red flags, including windows that had been sealed from the inside and the loud hum of industrial ventilation equipment. These signs of clandestine activity prompted the builders to contact Essex Police immediately rather than entering the secured buildings.
A drone pursuit across the Essex countryside
Before law enforcement could reach the remote location, the contractors deployed a drone to monitor the property from a safe distance.. The drone captured footage of several individuals, described as "guardians," fleeing through the surrounding fields to avoid capture.. As reported, the footage specifically showed one suspect wearing a white baseball cap, black shorts, and a black jumper attempting to outrun the hovering aircraft.
This use of consumer drone technology provided Essex Police with immediate visual intelligence on the number of suspects and their direction of flight. the footage served as a critical bridge between the initial discovery by Keystones Property Group and the arrival of tactical units on the scene.
Hundreds of plants and a second barn in preparation
Upon entering the compound, Essex Police found an "extremely substantial" operation featuring hundreds of cannabis plants arranged in rows. the facility was equipped with professional-grade growing equipment and extensive ventilation systems designed to mask the scent and regulate the temperature of the former chicken barn. The scale of the operation led authorities to estimate the value of the crop at approximately £1 million.
Beyond the plants, the criminals had established a full-time residence within the site. Police discovered dedicated living quarters that included beds, cooking facilities, and food storage, suggesting that the site was manned 24 hours a day. Furthermore, officers noted that a second large barn on the property was already being prepared for similar use , indicating a planned expansion of the drug factory.
The 24-year-old suspect and the missing organizers
Following the drone-assisted chase, Essex Police arrested a 24-year-old man on suspicion of cannabis cultivation. The suspect has since been released under investigation as the police continue to analyze evidence gathered from the Layer Marney site. Keystones Property Group has pledged full cooperation with the ongoing investigation to identify the parties who originally instructed them to attend the property.
Several critical questions remain unanswered.. While one man was arrested, the drone footage showed multiple suspects fleeing the scene, leaving the identity and whereabouts of the other "guardians" unknown. Additionally , it remains unclear who actually owned or leased the land to the criminals, or how the operation managed to remain undetected during the initial July visit by the contractors.
