Sorif Uddin, a 28-year-old taxi driver from Lozells, has aovided a prison sentence after pleading guilty to the physical assault of his wife. During proceedings at Birmingham Crown Court, evidence was presented detailing how Uddin used a belt to whip the victim and strangled her during a domestic dispute.
A belt, a chokehold, and a ten-second struggle
The Birmingham Crown Court heard testimony regarding the intense physical violence inflicted by Sorif Uddin upon his wife. According to the report, the victim managed to film portions of the assault, including footage of Uddin lashing her with a belt. Most significantly, the court viewed video of Uddin grabbing the victim's throat in a chokehold that lasted for at least ten seconds , during which time she struggled to breathe.
The verbal abuse accompanying the physical violence was equally severe. Uddin reportedly used derogatory language, calling his wife a "street girl" and a "mistake." In one instance, he allegedly demanded to know if she was "abiding by my rule ," while also referring to her as a "daughter of animal." These actions left the victim suffering from defensive injuries to her hands and significant psychological trauma,including heart palpitations and suicidal ideation.
A two-year suspended sentence for Sorif Uddin
Judge Stacy Newnham-Payne ultimately decided that imprisonment would not addreess the underlying issues driving Uddin's behavior. As reported, the judge handed down a two-year sentence, which is suspended for a period of three years.. To facilitate rehabilitation, Uddin was ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work and undergo a "skills for relationships" toolkit.
The legal consequences for Uddin also include a seven-year restraining order to protect the victim from further contact. The defendant has already faced professional repercussions; he lost his position as a taxi driver after failing to pass a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. The pair met on Instagram in 2019, while the victim was living in Bangladesh. Following the end of her first arranged marriage in 2022, the couple entered into an Islamic marriage in August 2023.
The violence escalated significantly in 2024, leading to a police intervention at their Lozells residence. on October 13, the victim managed to dial 999 to request help. When police arrived at the home, they found no one at the door but forced entry after hearing screams from within. The prosecutor described the victim as being in a state of hysteria and hyperventilation when she was eventually located in a bedroom.

During police interviews, Sorif Uddin denied the abuse and suggested that his wife was fabricating the complaints to improve her legal status in the UK.
