According to the CBC News broadcast, rising fuel prices are expected to drive up food costs across Canada, starting with imported produce and some meat and dairy products. Winnipeg grocery store owner Monther Zaid stated that shippers and suppliers are adding fuel surcharges, which he is being forced to pass on to consumers. He cited a recent price increase on a two-pound bag of onions, rising from 75 cents to $1.00.

Despite a 15% fall in oil prices following the announcement of a two-week ceasefire, consumers and the economy will continue to feel the impact until energy markets stabilize.

Alberta First Nation Challenges Separation Referendum
The Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation in Alberta is seeking an injunction to halt a petition advocating for a referendum on Alberta’s separation from Canada, arguing that the campaign violates its treaty rights. The First Nation contends that a separation referendum requires its consent, as treaties were signed with the British Crown and the responsibility to uphold them rests with Canada.
Stay Free Alberta, the group behind the petition, disagrees, stating that citizens have the right to petition their government. Alberta’s premier has indicated she will move forward with a province-wide referendum if the petition gathers enough verified signatures.
