Fishermen in Italy's Po River Delta have pivoted from destroying invasiive Atlantic blue crabs to selling them as exports. This shift follows a failed government campaign that incinerated millions of kilograms of the crustaceans.

The failure of the 2.3 million kilogram incineration program

The Italian government attempted a drastic eradication strategy in 2024 to protect Manila clam and mussel farms. According to the report, the state paid the Polesine Fishermen's Cooperative Consortium and other groups in the Orbetello and Sacca di Goro lagoons to catch and burn nearly 2.3 million kilograms of Atlantic blue crabs.

Despite the scale of the cull, the project was eventually shelved. Enrico Caterino, the government's extraordinary commissioner for the blue crab emergency, noted that the effort barely impacted the population because female crabs can produce as many as 8 million eggs per season.

From a 75 percent revenue crash to a 20 million euro forecast

The economic toll of the invasion was immediate and severe for the Veneto and Emilia Romagna regions. The Polesine Fishermen's Cooperative Consortium saw its revenues plummet by 75 percent to 15 million euros between 2024 and 2025, while its active membership dwindled from 1,500 to 850.

To survive, the consortium, led by president Paolo Mancin, shifted its focus toward international export markets. As the report says, the cooperative has sold every crab caught this year and now forecasts annual revenues of 20 million euros ($23 million), largely driven by these sales. For second-generation fishermen like Federico Zago, this pivot is the only way to salvage a livelihood that had nearly collapsed.

How Po River droughts and rising temperatures fueled the invasion

While Atlantic blue crabs have existed in the Adriatic Sea since the 1940s—likely arriving via commercial ship ballast water—their population exploded in 2023. Piero Genovesi of Italy's environmental protection institute suggests that climate change created the perfect storm for this surge.

Rising water temperatures encouraged reproduction, but the critical trigger was a series of droughhts that lowered the Po River's levels. This allowed saltwater to push further into freshwater tributaries and lagoons, providing the crabs with easy access to the clam and mussel farms they prey upon. This pattern reflects a broader global trend where shifting salinity levels and warming oceans allow invasive species to colonize preivously inhospitable zones.

Biological control remains a point of contention and uncertainty in the Adriatic Sea. This summer, scientists from the University of Bologna released 150,000 baby octopuses on the Riviera Romagnola to act as natural predators.

However, the viability of this plan is questionable. Many of the baby octopuses are not expected to survive, and both experts and local fishermen remain skeptical that a predator can keep pace with the crab's massive reproductive capacity. It remains unclear whether the Italian government will provide further funding for biological interventions or if the industry will rely entirely on commercial harvesting to manage the population.
